Kick Off Summer Reading Program at the Flint Hills International Children's Festival

Date: May 11th, 2012

Join the Saint Paul Public Library at the Ordway's Flint Hills International Children's Festival at Rice Park on June 2 and 3, as the Library kicks off the 2012 Summer Reading Program.

The Flint Hills Festival takes place right outside Central Library's front door. Stop by the library for performances by Circus Manduhai and Bill the Juggler. Visit the library's booth at the festival, where you can work with staff from Mosaic on a Stick to create a mosaic to display at Central Library. You can also pick up your Summer Reading Program materials at the library booth.

The library's annual Summer Reading Program is for kids birth to 18 and runs from June through August. Kids read what they choose, earn book rewards, and enter drawings for other great prizes.

"Keeping children engaged in learning throughout the summer helps maintain or build reading skills," said Karen Kolb Peterson, Youth/Public Services Manager at Saint Paul Public Library. "Our Summer Reading Program at Saint Paul Public Library offers almost 100 literacy-based activities to nurture children's curiosity and encourage learning."

Summer Reading Program activities also are great for children who are not as confident in their reading skills, because they show kids that reading can be fun. Kids are more motivated to read when they pursue our own reading interests. In the Summer Reading Program, there are no required reading lists or tests. Children and young people read (or are read to) what they choose. The child (or their adult) tracks their reading time to be eligible for prizes.

All 12 libraries of the Saint Paul Public Library and the Bookmobile host a variety of summer reading programs for children and their families, beginning with the kick off at the Ordway's Flint Hills International Children's Festival at Rice Park on June 2 and 3.
