Saint Paul Public Library Offers Storytimes in Spanish this Summer

Date: Jul 21st, 2011

SAINT PAUL, MN - Saint Paul Public Library will offer world language storytimes in Spanish at various library locations this summer.

"Many people may not know that the best way to learn a new language is to first strengthen one's own native language," said Erika Vázquez, Spanish storytime presenter at Saint Paul Public Library. "Native language skills and literacy are vital to the attainment of bilingual speaking ability and give children a sense of pride and cultural connection."

Storytime in Spanish is an opportunity for parents, siblings, and other caregivers to spend time with their children engaging in a universally fun activity. World language storytimes are designed for children who speak Spanish at home and their parents or caregivers, as well as organizations serving children and families.

Storytimes offer a valuable listening and pre-reading experience for children of all ages and support early literacy, which has been shown to be vitally important for a child's future and aid later school achievement.

Hora de cuentos/Spanish Storytimes are designed for children ages 2 and up to help families or caregivers get children ready to read. Saint Paul Public Library also offers world language storytimes in Hmong, Somali and English.
