Freegal Help and FAQs

Freegal logoWhat is Freegal?

Freegal is a downloadable music service. It offers hundreds of thousands of songs in more than 100 genres of music, from more than 50 record labels. Songs are available in the MP3 format, with no Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions.

How do I log in to Freegal?

Go to the Freegal website.

To log in, you will need a valid library card number and your PIN (personal identification number).

You must follow the link from the library's website. Going to Freegal from a bookmark may not work.

How many songs can I download?

You can download up to 3 songs per week. The "Freegal week" runs from Monday through Sunday.

When you are logged in to the Freegal site, a counter displays at the top of the screen showing how many downloads you have used. If the counter reads 1/3, for example, you have used 1 of your 3 downloads for the week.

How do I download a song?

Click the "Download Now" link next to the song you want.

Music is downloaded as an MP3 file, which can be played using most music players, including iTunes.

Can I hear a sample before I download?

Yes. Click the arrow to the left of a song's title to hear a short sample of the song.

How do I search for a song or an artist?

Browse by genre or use the search box. Artists are listed alphabetically by first name, and groups with names that begin with "the" (for example, The Outfield) are found under "T".

Use the advanced search to search by song title, or to search by multiple criteria.

Is there a Freegal App?

Yes! Apps are available for iOS (iPod, iPhone, iPad) and Android devices. Find out more about Freegal Apps ...
