| March 17, 2006 Mayor Coleman Appoints Melanie Huggins Library DirectorSaint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman announced today that he has chosen Melanie Huggins as the next Director of the Saint Paul Public Library. Huggins will come to Saint Paul from Charlotte where she currently serves as the Director of Youth and Out reach Services for the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County . “I'm very excited to have the opportunity to bring this level of talent to Saint Paul. Melanie Huggins represents exactly what we are looking for in a library director. She is creative, energetic and will bring a new sense of possibility to our libraries,” Coleman said. Huggins brings a solid record of accomplishment to Saint Paul. She is credited with the creation of the first on-line summer reading program for young adults in the country, as well as the creation of the Teens Succeed Program, a nationally recognized 12-week program that provides classroom and practical experience in business Huggins also was a consultant with Providence and Associates, working on a 25 year Master Facilities and Service Plan for the State Library of Delaware, and for the Saint Paul Public Library’s strategic planning process. Her appointment will go to the City Council for approval. Ward 3 Councilman and Library Board Chair Pat Harris has already shown support for Huggins “Melanie is a proven leader who will lead with an eye on the long term interests of our library system. Her strategic planning skills are essential as we look at how we can best serve our residents in a time of increasingly tight budgets, Harris said. Huggins currently holds a BA in Fine Art from Winthrop University, MLS from the University of South Carolina and was a Fellow at the Executive Leadership Institute of the Urban Libraries Council in Washington D.C.
