October 12, 2006 New Hours, New Services at the LibrarySaint Paul Public Library is changing how it serves customers. Beginning November 5 the hours at 11 of Saint Paul Public Library’s 13 locations will be changing. Larger branches having a wider range of services will keep their current hours, but will also now be open on weekday mornings. The library plans to add wireless internet access for customers in 2007 as well. Hamline Midway Branch, Hayden Heights Branch, Merriam Park Branch, Rice Street Branch and Riverview Branch will be closed on Sundays beginning November 5. Central Library, at 90 West Fourth Street in downtown Saint Paul, will be open on Sundays for the first time in over 30 years. Street parking is free on Sundays. Central Library and the Sun Ray, Saint Anthony Park, Rondo Outreach, and Highland Park Branches will all remain open on Sundays. All will offer Wi-Fi service by early 2007. “This is a really exciting change,” said Melanie Huggins, Library Director. “We are increasing our library hours at key locations throughout the city where we have the most resources. This change will improve customer access to materials and other services while helping the library make the best use of its staffing resources. Central Library has such a wonderful collection, and it’s a great opportunity for more St. Paulites to have access to it.” Huggins added that programs for adults, children and teens are being planned for Sunday afternoons at Central Library. Grant-funded Americorps and VISTA volunteers are working with library staff to bring free technology training to the community. Current and upcoming opportunities include one-to-one internet coaching, classes on basic computer skills, word processing, internet and e-mail fundamentals, and web surfing classes for seniors, For more information on hours and upcoming programs, call 651-266-7000 or visit www.sppl.org.
