August 1, 2006 Rondo Library’s Grand Opening Set for Saturday, September 9
In addition to Library tours, the grand opening features live performances throughout the day, free gift giveaways, opportunities to participate in bookmaking demonstrations and other activities. Entertainment is provided by arts and cultural groups representing many of the communities served by the Rondo Library. All events and activities throughout the day are free and open to the public. Schedule of EventsThe Hmong Peace Dancers , enhancing and enriching Hmong youth’s knowledge, interest, and pride in their culture and heritage, perform at 11 a.m. Comedian, storyteller, and rap artist Tou Ger Xiong follows at noon. Tou Ger combines personal stories and explosive energy into a lively performance. Get ready to listen, learn and laugh along in a program that not only teaches us about the colorful world in which we live, but a little more about ourselves, too. Los Alegres Bailadores – the oldest and largest Mexican dance troupe in Minnesota – heat up the afternoon with a performance of traditional Mexican folk dances beginning at 1 p.m. Starting at 1:00 p.m. and offered all afternoon in the Teen Area, will be Dance, Dance Revolution – an innovative video game offering fun, excitement, and a great workout! The game is played on a dance pad with four arrow panels: left, right, up and down. The panels are pressed using the player’s feet, in response to arrows that appear on the video screen in front of the player, synchronized to the beat of a chosen song. Success depends on the player’s ability to time and position his or her steps accordingly. Don’t worry about being able to dance - after a while you develop your own style, and it’s fun for others to watch. From 1:45 until 4:00 p.m., artists from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts will demonstrate, and both children and adults will have an opportunity to make books. The artistic vision of Minnesota Center for Book Arts is to preserve the traditional crafts of bookmaking, to advance the book as a vital contemporary art form, and to interpret the book in its aesthetic, historic, and cultural contexts. This is your chance to learn what the Art of the Book is all about. Renaissance Fair veteran and perennial Library favorite, Bill the Juggler entertains young and old alike at 2 p.m., with his deft, gravity-defying displays of objects flying through the air, accompanied by a comic patter of words. The Walker West Music Academy Youth Jazz Ensemble performs at 2:15 p.m. Walker West is a music school dedicated to instruction and performance inspired by—and reflected in—the African-American experience and language of music; and committed to the recognition and celebration of diverse cultures through the study of their unique language of music. Storyteller Danielle Daniel takes the stage at 3 p.m., skillfully sharing tales, stories, riddles and jokes handed down through the generations. She uses her performances as a bridge between cultures, reminding audience members of the importance of sharing their own stories. World Champion Fancy Dancer Larry Yazzie is featured at 4 p.m. The Fancy Dance is beloved for its flamboyant and colorful regalia, as well as the physical challenge it poses for powwow competition dancers. GiveawaysThere will be free gifts for grand opening visitors: the first 500 children and the first 500 adults through the door will receive a gift bag including a free book, and there will be other fun freebies for everyone. St. Paul Travelers is the corporate sponsor of the grand opening, and the Saint Paul Pioneer Press is our media partner. Don’t miss out on the fun!
