December 4, 2007 John Coy & David LaRochelle: Reading Choices 2007 Young Adult WinnersOn Saturday, December 15, at 2 p.m., celebrated Minnesota children’s authors John Coy and David LaRochelle read from and discuss their books, recently chosen among the winners of the International Reading Association Choices 2007 for Young Adult literature. The reading will take place at Central Library, Youth Services, 90 W. Fourth St., Saint Paul. Each year, thousands of children, young adults, teachers, and librarians around the United States select their favorite recently published books for the “Choices” booklists. Students selected approximately 30 books in the Young Adult category, among which were John Coy’s Crackback and David LaRochelle’s Absolutely, Positively Not. Crackback centers on Miles Manning, and the hits he takes on and off the football field drive this gripping story. In the course of the book, Miles discovers that it’s impossible to please everyone, there is something to learn from the second-string players on his team, and that there is life beyond football. In LaRochelle’s Absolutely, Positively Not, sixteen-year-old Steven DeNarski doesn’t know if he’ll pass his driver’s test or if he’ll ever understand his parents, but there’s one thing he’s sure of: he’s absolutely, positively NOT gay. He sets out to prove it by collecting photos of girls in bikinis, sitting at the jock table at school, and dating like crazy. This program is free and open to the public.
