Saint Paul Children will Experience a Day in the Life of a Kindergartner at Ready for School Day at Minnesota Children’s Museum

Press Release: PDF | Word

The Minnesota Children’s Museum in downtown Saint Paul will host a Ready for School Day, November 9, for four-year-olds and their caretakers to experience a day in the life of a kindergartner from 4 to 8 p.m. The City of Saint Paul, Saint Paul Public Library, Saint Paul Public Schools and the Greater Twin Cities United Way teams with the Museum to create this event to emphasize school readiness for all children.

“Providing opportunities to prepare children for school is a centerpiece of our education agenda in Saint Paul. This event will highlight the early literacy programs taking place in our libraries which are making a real difference in putting all of our children on a path to success in Saint Paul,” Mayor Coleman said.

The afternoon will offer a welcome and story time by Mayor Chris Coleman, a kindergarten classroom experience, a school bus ride through downtown, boxed dinner, and a free backpack for every child participant. Each backpack comes with a copy of the book, Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come/Preparate, kindergarten! Alla voy! by local children’s author Nancy Carlson. Backpacks and supplies inside are courtesy of United Way’s Success By 6™ initiative.

The event will focus on the caregivers’ role in preparing children for kindergarten. The Saint Paul Public Library will provide take-home materials about preparing children for school. Parents can continue to access school readiness information on the Blast Off To Kindergarten’s website, www.blastofftok.org.

The website offers activities and books to support the skills that are necessary for kindergarten, steps to take in enrolling children in school, and many links to informative websites. Helpful information is organized month-by-month, but the activities can be used anytime throughout the year. Links to the Saint Paul Public School District and the Saint Paul Public Libraries are also featured. The website offers information in English, Hmong, Spanish and Somali.
