One-To-One Reading Help
The Saint Paul Public Library connects students in 1st through 8th grades with reading tutors throughout the school year. Participants in the free reading programs, Read With Me and Reading To Achieve, meet one-to-one with tutors for one hour per week. The goal is to help build confidence and interest in reading, and form a positive mentoring relationship.
Read With Me
The Read With Me program serves 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders and targets development of reading and writing skills and builds an enjoyment of reading.
Reading To Achieve
The Reading To Achieve program serves 4th through 8th graders, helping them to become active and engaged readers, diving deeper into an understanding of what they are reading.
Meeting and Reading
Read With Me and Reading To Achieve participants meet for one hour per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays after school or on Saturdays and Sundays depending on each library's open hours. Library locations and meeting times will be determined by participants and the program coordinator.
Signing Up
Please fill out the student application and bring it to your neighborhood Saint Paul Public Library, or send to the program coordinator at Rondo Community Outreach Library. Participants must attend their weekly meeting for a minimum of one academic semester.
- Student applications for the 2012-13 school year are no longer being taken.
- Applications for the 2013-14 school year will be taken August-October 2013.
Volunteer Commitment
Tutors must commit to meeting each week for one hour sessions for at least one semester. A year long commitment is preferred. All tutoring sessions meet at a Saint Paul Public Library.
Volunteer Qualifications
Tutors must be proficient in reading and writing as well has have a keen interest in helping children succeed. Tutors must be at least 17 years old. A background check is required before beginning the program.
Volunteer Training
Read With Me and Reading To Achieve tutors are required to attend a one-time three hour session where they will learn basic teaching techniques and activities. Other training opportunities are presented to tutors through the academic year.
