Rules Governing the Use of the Saint Paul Public Library

To ensure your visit to the Library is safe and enjoyable, the following actions are prohibited:

Physical, sexual, or verbal abuse of other library users or of library staff.

Carrying weapons of any type unless authorized by law.

Defacing or destroying library property.

Interfering with free passage of others, blocking them with one’s body, belongings or furniture.

Behaving in a disorderly, loud, or disruptive manner.

Fraudulently using Internet workstations, by such activities as extending time limitations for the use of a computer, or by using an unauthorized library card. Failing to adhere to the Saint Paul Public Library Policy on the Internet and Internet Usage Guidelines.

Soliciting, selling, petitioning or panhandling in the library or on library grounds. Campaigning is not allowed in libraries except at meetings in library meeting rooms.

Interfering with others' use of the library through poor personal hygiene.

Leaving young children or vulnerable adults unsupervised or unattended.

Bringing non-service animals into the library.

Bringing carts, wagons, bicycles or other vehicles into the library except as required for young children or persons with disabilities.

Using skateboards or similar non-motorized devices.

Photographing or videographing within the library without authorization.

Bringing food or uncovered beverages into the library.

Entering the library with oversized items too large to fit under a study chair. Leaving personal items unattended.

Consuming alcoholic beverages or controlled substances or smoking. Being under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances in a manner that causes a public disturbance.

Engaging in any activities while on library premises that are not related to the proper use of the library; proper use includes reading, studying, using library materials, attending library programs, etc.

The library staff has the right to:

Check bags.

Request identification when applying for a library card.

Restrict the length of time an individual may use library equipment when others are waiting to use it.

Make decisions that are in the best interest of the Library, whenever these Rules do not specifically cover certain situations.

Persons found to be violating these rules will be asked to discontinue that activity. If they continue, they will be asked to leave the library facility. If they refuse, the police may be called to remove them..
