What's Included?

The Miller Song Index includes sheet music in the Central Library's collection, including individual pieces, sheet music collected in books, sheet music printed in magazines, and the contents of the library's collection of "fake books."

What if I can't find the piece I am looking for?

As of January 2008, 23,000 pieces of sheet music are indexed online, which just begins to scratch the surface of the library's holdings. Nearly 250,000 records are indexed in a card catalog at the Central Library. Also, the records for many newer compilations include titles of individual songs in their online card catalog records.

If you can't find the piece you are looking for:

• Search the library catalog by title and/or keyword.
• Call the Central Library's reference department at 651-266-7000, extension 5.
• Email the reference department at sppl.info@ci.stpaul.mn.us.

What do I do when I find a musical piece?

Record the source, call number, page number of the piece. Library staff can help you locate the piece.

• Stop by reference desk in the Nicholson Information Commons, on the 2nd floor of the Central Library, or stop by your local branch for assistance.

What does "Source" mean?

Indexed sheet music comes from a variety of sources, including:

• Field - The Field Sheet Music Collection, which consists of separate pieces of vintage sheet music.
• Fake Book - Collections of popular songs in book form, which include their melodies, lyrics, and chords.
• Magazine - sheet music printed in Sheet Music Magazine. Look in the History field for the month of the issue.
• Circulating - contained in a book that can be checked out.
• Reference - contained in a book that can be used in the library only, but may be copied for personal use.
